Guys, am I able to simply replace the startup/shutdown gifs in the system folder with new ones? And do the replacements need to be named exactly as per the originals?

My Maxx died last week after replacing these default gifs and whilst I think it's death had more to do with me replacing the battery whilst the phone was still connected via USB, I don't want to take any chances. I received a new Maxx yesterday (my 4th - long story) and really don't want to go down this road again.

It would seem to me that these gifs should be named something specific so that the phone knows what to look for but I've noticed in different flexes that there's no consistency with the naming. I'm currently using a Telstra-branded flex and the default names are:
TelstraStartup and TelstraShutdown.

Opinions??

just replace them with the same name gifs, that should do the trick

i dont think you can truly brick your phone by messing up the gifs either. there is always bootloader mode :)

Yup. So far I've white screened it three times working on DRM's, but it was fine, I just put a new DRM back on and it was good to go.

Cool. I just did it and all worked perfectly. Thanks guys.

Poetic_Folly, what exactly do you mean by "white screened it"? Is this where the screen is blinking white and black, and connecting/disconnecting from the USB at the same time?

Yup, thats exactly it.

Yup, thats exactly it. Ok, I experienced that in my first week of owning my Maxx but didn't know how to fix it.....so I got a replacement:grin: Now I know what to do. Thanks man

Yah its easy enough. Just start in boot loader mode and flash an MP or flash or whatever. Whatever you messed with to make it do that, just replace with one you know works.
