connect your phone to the computer, turn off your phone, then press * # and the power button all at the same time. That puts it in bootloader mode and the computer may recognize it then

yeah, you need the drivers and other software to get stuff on and off your phone. a good place to start would be here:

I recently got my k1m from sprint hooked up to my computer as well.
For me a key file that I could not get from anywhere else was this. (http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/Handset_USB_Driver/)
You need to register with the owner of the file before you can download, it is easy and free.
After that, use the rest of the drivers in the "Motorola Drivers v2.9" .rar file. You should be able to dump all of those files into system32/drivers and make the install easier.
After you have the Motorola handset USB driver double click on the file like any other .exe and watch the magic happen. After it runs its path just plug your phone in and a few other things will be installed by windows automatically. Instead of PST I ran RSD lite, dunno if that matters too much. Just google for RSD lite 3.x and you should be in buisness.

Contact the appropriate CDMA provider then use PST to load their PRL. Thats if they will let you use another companies phone. thats a pretty big if anymore, in the US at least.
