View Full Version : editing the outer LCD logo, vcm

Finally got my vcm working and all connected up. Just fyi, editing the outer logo is pretty simple, in the /a/mobile folder there is a .gif file. For my phone its Sprint.gif. I just sized a pic to 96 x 80 pixels, named it Sprint.gif, and replaced the file. Power cycle your phone and there you go.

It only works that way on sprint and verizon phones (verizon.gif) on alltel, telus, and USCC you have to seem edit. There may be more carriers for each method but those are the ones I know for sure

It now has the original motorola "M" on the outside when opened, but i don't know where to find that image on my phone in order to replace. i've went to the directory a/mobile/ but i still can't find it. can someone please help?

As far as we know, there is only 2 different methods for changing the outside pic, if you have loooked in the /a/mobile and there's no picture then you need to try the 'Seem edit method' listed in this guide:
http://www.modmymoto.com/guides/cdma/lcd.php
I haven't found anywhere on the internet where someone has done this on a cricket phone, but doing it is straightforward and the worst thing that'll happen is you'll get the plain old motorola logo in your external LCD.
If you aren't familiar with seem editing, check out this guide to get you started:
http://www.modmymoto.com/guides/cdma/seemediting.php
The external LCD guide was written assuming you are familiar with the seem editing software.
Just follow the instructions exactly and carefully and let us know how it works! If it doesn't I'm sure we can figure it out.
FYI: The motorola logo is the default image it displays if the external LCD config files are blank or incorrect, you won't find it as a file in the phone, it's embedded in the Firmware somewhere.

Ok maybe I am doing something wrong here that someone can help me with.
I have the RAZR V3m from Verizon.
I have installed the MTP, PST, Phone Drivers, p2kseem and p2kcommander.
I have tried to follow the seem editor part of this and have done everything it said and nothing changed. Then I tried to just change the gif file and still nothing happens. I have deleted the moto.gif and verizon.gif files from the /a/mobile directory on the phone and still nothing changes. Is there something that I am completely missing here?

you weren't supposed to do the seem edit method. The guide doesn't say it works for verizon
All you had to do, was name the picture you wanted 'verizon.gif' (minus the quotes) and replace the 'verizon.gif' on your phone with the new one.
Now what you need to do is take your backups of seem 2771, 2772, and 275a and load them back on the phone, (you did make backups, right?) then just follow the verizon instructions at the bottom of the guide under "The Easy Replace Method"
The regular method won't work until you load the unedited seems back on there

I tried that. I did the easy way first and nothing happened so then I tried the seem edits and nothing happened.... and then I deleted everything... and still nothing happened.
Once I did the step 4 of the seem edit where you turn a bit on, I got the text but no logo. So I undid that and the Motorola screen is back now.

So did you power cycle (turn it off, then back on) your phone after you replaced the verizon.gif? If so, is the picture you're trying to put on there 96 pixels by 80 pixels? Also is it a .gif file?

yeah I did all that. I spent like 6 hours today at work (I was bored) trying to get this to work.
Now, if I do a master reset on my phone (I know I lose everything, but the address book is backed up already) will it completely reset my seem and everything?

no it won't reset your seem. You have to re-flash or put your clean backup back on there.
Wow man, I don't know what else to tell you, replacing that Verizon.gif should do it, I've talked to other people that've done it with no problem. Sorry I can't help more

Thanks for all the help so far. Is there a re-flash out there that I can download for the Verizon V3m?

Ok, I downloaded RSD lite and flashed it with that. That program worked and the phone SW version show as the new version.
Now, what did that do? Reset everything with the seem correct?

That's correct, it's now as good as a stock phone. Commence modding!

Thanks for all the help! After Flashing it, the outside logo changed immediately. Then all the seems I did started to make it work. So now I can use the MPT to transfer ringers and pics back and forth. My favorite though is the Vib and Ring func. I hated that about this phone.

n00b question:
i've been reading this guide: http://www.modmymoto.com/guides/cdma/lcd.php
and i have a sprint krzr k1m
how do i access the /a/mobile/ directory?
None of the programs seem to work for me except the newest Motorola Phone Tools where it doesn't have that directory.

You should be able to do it with p2kcommander. Have you read the "Get connected" Guide?
http://www.modmymoto.com/guides/cdma/getconnected.php
you have to do that first before the programs will work correctly. If you have already done that, make sure you have PST running before you open p2k commander and leave it running while you're using p2k commander

First post, be kind to the n00b pls. :D I only found all this modding world info last night because I was looking for a hack that would allow me to delete the stupid stock wallpapers on my Verizon (CDMA) V3m. I learned from another site that BitPim is what I will need to access my a/directory for things like this.
My n00b question: do I have to do SEEM editing or Flash the phone before I can do simple deletions of unwanted files via BitPim?
I am intrigued by the options offered by the more complicated cracks but would like to start with something simple that I'm unlikely to mess up.
TIA. /n00b

Welcome yo ModMyMoto lexicaljewel! You don't have to do anything to delete your unwanted ringtones and wallpapers. Just connect to BitPIM and click on "filesystem" in the bottom left hand side and browse to the appropriate directories.
If you need help with more complicated mods, check out our guides section for the V3c/V3m. Those guides say they're for the USCC V3c, but it all works on a V3m too.

Thanks so much nevarDeath...should I be able to change the outer LCD image the same way, just by editing a file to the right dimensions and giving it the right name? I have read two different names that it should be under, cl.gif and verizon.gif. I guess I'll just have a look and see which one I actually have?

If you have a verizon phone, it'll be verizon.gif. Yes make sure it's a gif image that is 96x80 and you have to name it verizon.gif before you put it on the phone.
See the bottom of this guide "Easy Replace Method":
http://www.modmymoto.com/guides/cdma/lcd.php
EDIT: Here are a boatload of pictures you can use:
http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=966
just rename them to verizon.gif ;)

You just let me know when I'm annoying you, nevarDeath. ;)
I was doing some more reading and it looks like I canNOT skin this phone, i.e. I am stuck with the red banner stripes across the top and bottom unless I want a brick. Is this true? Or if I do the Alltel firmware Flash will I eliminate this glitch?
nevarDeath
01-05-2007, 02:48 PM
I've always got time for a pretty lady ;)
You cannot skin it with regular skins no. The Alltel flash will fix that though. There are some skins for the Verizon firmware, but I forget where I saw them now. They still don't eliminate the red bars though.

*blush*
Mmkay, so I think I am getting ahead of myself already, BUT...if I do the BitPim file changes, say for the verizon.gif, and THEN decide to do the Alltel flash, won't I be changing the file structure and overwriting the gif tile I have added? And will doing the Alltel flash make the BitPim access redundant/unnecessary, or will I still need to access my file directories the same way even with the firmware?
nevarDeath
01-05-2007, 03:28 PM
Yep, the alltel flash will overwrite that. Actually, it's gonna overwrite everything, so backup all your contacts, and other stuff you've added. I am *pretty sure* you need to backup your ERI,PRL, 1xRTT data, MMS config, and BREW config. these can be downloaded from your phone with PST.
Here is the guide for doing it on the V3c, It'll work for the V3m pretty much the same, but backup those files I just listed and use the V3m flash, which can be found here:
http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=2182
If you do the alltel flash (which also gives you full bluetooth functionality) you will still need bitPIM to access your files on the phone. BitPIM is not the only way to do it either. That's (accessing files on your phone that is) discussed in my guides on this site:

Hmmm, I have accomplished my primary objective, which was getting rid of all those annoying stock wallpapers! But I can't locate verizon.gif through BitPim. It must be stored in a different directory than the regular wallpapers - is there a way to navigate to it through BitPim? Thank you again!
I guess I spoke too soon...to me it looks like I have deleted the pictures in BitPim but sending them to my phone has not changed anything that is in the actual phone. Hmmm. Have tried it several times and powered on and off...any ideas?
nevarDeath
01-05-2007, 04:54 PM
yep, it's in the /a/mobile directory.
there's a guide for it here:

Verizon is at the bottom ;)
What picture are you using?

Hmm, I've never had that problem with BitPIM, although I haven't used it much. You will probably have to use p2kcommander. In order to use it, you must also have PST running before you open p2kcommander. Instructions are here:

hmmm, i followed that guide very explicitly.
i am still having trouble have my Sprint KRZR k1m to connect to p2kcommander. I've done everything you said, leaving PST running, ect.
My phone will only connect to the motorola phone tools.
The problem is now i think i've screwed up that connection.

yeah you may want to use RSD Lite 3.2 instead of PST.(just google for it like you did PST) The K1m is a bit different for some reason.
