View Full Version : Just about had it with my K1M

I've tried nearly everything to get this stupid thing connected to my PC. I've read through this site, motomodders.com, and howardforums.com, and try things over and over again, even on different workstations, and have the same results. Hopefully someone can help me out here.
OS: Windows XP SP2 (3 different computers)
Phone: KRZR K1M
Carrier: Verizon...who've I've grown to hate after upgrading to the K1M and learning they disable features
What I've tried:
-Installed Motorola Phone Tools, let it update, installed it, connected the phone...the PC finds it the first time, a few drivers are installed, then MPT goes into a "initializing", then says the phone isn't connected. If I disconnect and reconnect, it won't find it again.
-Motorola Update Utility - Never finds the phone, I install
-BitPim - I had this working ONCE a couple of different ways. I was able to use the Other CDMA Phone setting attached to the com port that Moto USB Modem was found on. Then once using the V3c, but both left me with pretty much nothing I could really do.
-P2K - Yeah right, never had it working.
Most of the time I can't even get my PC to see the phone. I plug it in, it chirps, charges, etc...but the PC won't work with it.
Here is what my goal is:
1. Get back the stuff verizon disables, such as the side button letting me launch the music player, support for java games (?), other ringtones, etc
2. I have a MicroSD chip in the cardslot, and thought I read somewhere that when connected, XP should see this as a removeble disc that I can copy my pics/vids/music to and from the device, I'd like this functionality, taking that chip out every time I want to add music is a pain.
3. SPEED UP THE MENUS...I also read in one of these sites that someone found the seem edit (?) to increase menu speed
Anyone care to help me out on this? And I don't mean pointing me to the threads that have the instructions I've already tried....can you give a step by step list of how to get this VZW piece of garbage working like it should?
BTW - Love the site, before getting the K1M I had no idea that entire communites existed for modding phones.

ok... I'll see if I can help...
I reccomend that you install the proper drivers first;
I pulled this off of hacktherazr.com (http://hacktherazr.com/guide.setup.usb.html)
Installing the Motorola Driver Installer
1. After you download the Motorola Driver Installer (http://hacktherazr.com/app/hacktherazr.com-Motorola-Driver-Installer.zip)you need to first unzip it. The easiest was is simply double clicking the setup file (even before you unzip it) which will extract it to a temporary location and automatically launch the setup
Otherwise, extract the setup file to a place you'll remember, then go there and execute the setup file
Watch the Video Guide (javascript:toggleLayer('guide-motodriver-install');)
2. Make sure that your phone is unplugged from your computer, and then goto Start > All Programs > Motorola Driver Installer > Motorola Driver Installer .exe
3. It will automatically begin the "Clean Only" option. After it finishes the initial clean, click the radio checkbox for "Clean & Reinstall" and then click the [ Start ] button
Watch the Video Guide (javascript:toggleLayer('guide-motodriver-program');)
After its completed, click the [ Exit ] button
4. Now plug in your phone! You should notice 2 or 3 balloons pop up out of the system tray recognizing your new phone. Due to the Motorola Driver Installer, all of these drivers should automatically install and then say "Found New Hardware".
Watch the Video Guide (javascript:toggleLayer('guide-motodriver-plugin');)
4. You are all setup and ready to go! Now you can move onto the bigger, badder guides :)
MP3's
next, putting MP3's on the phone, WITHOUT taking the card out.
you need to DOWNLOAD THIS (http://support.vzw.com/pdf/Sync_Music_Fix.exe) fix that verizon put out.
THEN, once that is installed,
To sync music in Windows Media Player:
Use the USB cable compatible with your phone to connect your phone to your PC.
Then open Windows Media Player 10 (or higher) and select the Sync tab.
On your phone, go to the Get It Now menu, select Get Tunes & Tones (or Music & Tones) and then select Sync Music.
In Windows Media Player 10 select Edit Playlist and select songs you want to sync and press OK. In Windows Media Player 11, select songs you want to sync and drag to the Sync List ("drag items here")
Select to sync to either the phone’s removable storage card or internal memory.
Select Start Sync in Windows Media Player.
When complete, on your phone, exit Sync Music and disconnect the cable from your phone.
RINGTONES
Check If MSU works now, if it does...

A couple of tips:
i) Try to crop your ringtones to about 30 secs. to save space.
ii) Turn Vibrate off on your phone. You will only get the default ringer if you have vibrate on and not assigned ringtones.
Step 1. Plug your, powered on, Krzr K1m into your computer and start either PST or MSU.
Step 2. Start P2KCommander
Step 3. In the left hand window of Commander browse to the folder in which you have your ringtones. In my case it looks like this C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Ringtones.
Step 4. In the right hand window of Commander browse, on your phone,to P2k:/a/motorola/shared/ringtone/ (With Alltel firmware it is a/motorola/shared/audio)
Step 5. Highlight the ringtone(s) in the left hand window and click on the copy button in the lower right of Commander.
Step 6. After your tone(s) have copied over, on your phone, browse back to P2k:/a/, and delete the file labeled MyToneDB.db
Step 7. Click on the restart button, in Commander, lower right. Unplug and close everything and you are done.

Same results when trying to go directly the site....anyone have a copy of the file?

ok so I did all of that with my Verizon krzr k1m/L7c and after everything I get "found new hardware" but then the found new hardware wizard comes up asking where it can search for software. I've tried searching everythign and it comes up saying "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot fnd the necessary software "

Was up all...
I did what you suggested graphcsguru and once the drivers were reinstalled and re-detected I still get the same errors as I got before. I'm on Telus, dont know if that makes a difference??? I'm at work now and dont remember the exact message but its something like data read error from p2k tools, after the error it still shows up as connected but I cant get it to read anything from the phone, the reset button does work though and does restart the phone???
HELP, I need my CTU ringer back...lol.
As for the drivers not installing right, after the driver cleanup, try going to device manager, deleting the 3 motorola entries (right click -> uninstall) then click the icon at the top to scan for new hardware, that should automatically get the drivers loaded again.

P2K Tools doesn't work with CDMA phones. P2K Commander does, and so does P2K Seem (those are the only two P2K programs I know that work with the phone) BUT to get P2K commander to work you need a program called MSU (motorola software update) running while you have a P2k program open.
The newer versions of P2K commander (i.e. v4.9.8) don't need MSU running and neither does Bitpim if you need help getting Bitpim running let me know...
