What can flashing do?

Hey folks. Sorry if these sounds really n00b but... I have an AT&T V3re.

Here's my question: If I flashed it with a backup from another carrier what would that do? Brick it, re-brand it, make it work with the flashed providers sims? I've looked around and no one mentions this.

Thanks for any insight. Looking to learn.

Flashing it would change its looks, but it doesn't unlock it. It can lock it if the Flash includes Lock info. But it doesn't unlock if there are no Lock info. It can debrand it if its an unbranded MP and can brand it if its a branded one.

Thanks Dumba - getting closer to understanding.

So

1. Flashing a branded MP (unlocked) will change the looks - skins, startup animations... but WILL NOT unlock the phone
2. Flashing a branded MP (locked) same as #1 and MAYBE re-lock an unlocked phone

If a phone gets re-locked from flashing can you use the same subsidy to unlock it again, or maybe a backup of the unlock sw?
