not getting connected

hello there. i'm a noob to moto modding. here is a noob question. i can't get my phone to connect to my pc. i've downloaded and installed the drivers, but the pc doesn't detect my phone when i plugg it in. and my phone give me an error msg "the memeory card is misssing, insert memory card and reconnect USB to try again". do i need to install an memory card into my phone before it'll detect it?
