Okay, first off, I'm a total cell phone newbie. I put off owning one for as long as humanly possible, and I've finally caved in. Having said that, I am pretty tech savvy.
I purchased my V3 new off of Ebay, received it on Friday, and immediately activated it with a T-Mobile pre-paid SIM card.
The problem I'm having (and the gal at the T-Mobile shop had) is: when you first turn the phone on, it can't locate the T-Mobile network. It searches, and searches, and eventually says "No Service", and then "Emergency Only". However, if you go into Settings->Network->Available Networks, it searches and finds Cingular and T-Mobile. If you select T-Mobile, then hit View->Register it tries to register, but to no avail. If you then go into Settings->Network->New Network it will finally find T-Mobile and register, and then the everything is fine. But that's the only way I can seem to get it to register, and I have to go through all that everytime I turn the phone off and back on.
In the Network Setup menu, the settings are set to:
Band=Automatic
Type=Automatic
Speed=Medium
It's a minor irritation I suppose, as once the phone is on and registered it seems to stay that way, but still...! My wife also has a V3 (an older one), on the same network (T-Mobile to go) and she has no such issues.
At any rate, it really seems like it may be a software issue. Would re-flashing the phone help?
If I could exchange the phone I would. But as I said, this was an Ebay purchase. I have no doubts that the phone was new, as it still had all the protective plastic adhesive attached inside and out. And the seller had a perfect feedback score, so I don't think he knowingly sold me a dud; of course who can say?
Any help or input is greatly appreciated.
