ok so i have a problem with the whole getting connected guide

So i am new at this whole modding buisness. Ok to start what i am trying to accompish is to unlock my friends T-moblie RAZR V3 so it will work with my cingular sim card.
OK so i open up the UID Extraction Tool as stated in the guide. I connect my RAZR to the computer and every time i encounter one of these 3 problems.
The computer does not detect any new device
The computer detects the new device but seconds later it says something went wrong (i forget what it actually says)
It only detects the RAZR and not and nothing else
what number 3 means is that in the picture below instead of saying The wizard will help you install the software for USB component cable (Motorola USB Modem, Motorola Accessory, Data Logging MCU Interface, Test Command Interface, or Motorola Flash Interface. ) it says instead The wizard will help you install the software for the RAZR or something around those lines. im sorry i cant be more specific but i havent recieved that in a long time.
Any help would be appreciated and im sorry if the explanation of my problem is confusing, as i said this is my first time modding
