Hello!

Just a question in regards to modding/flashing phones. As you can probably tell, I am new and starting off by looking at the how to mod guides, but reluctant to do so because I do not see many users with a BL of OC.F4 with FW: r3442a_G_0E.43.25R from t-mobile.

Just a few questions before I actually do anything.
Do i have to do anything to change/mod the BL or FW to customize, or can I use the tools posted?

From what I understand, I see that I can just flash the entire phone with a MP like sacreduser's. However, do I have to make sure it is compatible with my BL and FW or is it safe to flash over it?

Thanks!

Best is to make a backup of the phone first with the most recent copy of FB3, that way you can revert back to what you have now. Then its always better to flash from the same to the same, but its often not feasable. So we rely on all members to tell us what works and what doesn't. The Bootloader versions of the v3re a fairly new, so not all is discovered by far. Let us know how you get on. And you don't need to flash a full MP to mod the phone. You can try DRM modding or other stuff first.

I have used these programs with much success:
mexplorer for deleting or uploading ringtones, wallpaps, scrnsavrs(be carefull of what you delete there is a sticky of whats safe to delete)
midway for installing games and apps
p2k for extracting seems to do seem edits
RSDLite or Flash & Backup 3 for making backup of phone or install mp
These are the versions I use:
P2KToolsVS_3.0.7.759updated_by_mmuk
Motorola_MIDway_v2.8
P2kCommander-V4.9.E
RSDLite_4.1 or Flash&Backup3.0.7

chunkychunkz, if you look through the posts for jk_long03's more recent MP, you'll see that while it's BL version is 0C.C1, it has worked for phones with the 0C.F4 BL.

I'm not sure what the differences are, but it seems that they are at least comparable, even if it's not confirmed that they're completely compatable.

modnmotos can you backup java games & apps with midway ?

Not sure what you mean- Do you mean a game on you phone?(thats not on your computer) Let me look I remember reading just recently about backing up or download games from phone to computer....Now where was that, hum(lol). If I can find it Ill post it. Not with midway that I know of.

Couldnt find what I was talking about so I just tried this it and it worked:

1st with Mexplore goto /a/mobile/kjava (in there will look like:
j2me0.jad
j2me0.jar
j2me0.pat
j2me1.jad
j2me1.jar
j2me1.pat.....(each # is a game)
2nd pull a jar file off onto desktop(if not sure its the one you want, then make temp folder on desktop and extract jar in to that folder. Open some .gifs to see if its the game your wanting)
3rd when you find game you want to save, rename jar on desktop to the games name
4th pull matching jad file onto desktop and rename with (games name).jad(if your working with j2me3.jar then use j2me3.jad)

After this I used midway to open jad and reinstall game on phone.(Im playing it now)

Well, I have a question about Midway, while we're on the topic.

The only port I can get Midway to run with is 3, but in order to load java apps, supposedly you have to use either 2 or 6. I believe it: I can't load apps through port 3.

But I can't get any other ports to work. I get this message "Cannot open serial port! Would you like to change MIDway settings?"

I have no idea what to do.

And MotoMidMan appears to have problems with the v3re. I haven't seen any posts that indicate that anybody has been successful with that.

Not being able to load java makes me want to pull my hair out, lol.

Mine connects on port 4 and runs baud rate at 19200. I know this is a silly question, and you prob do, but do you gotojava app loader? Then phone says insert cable now? Then open midway on 4 @ 19200?

Danation if you have bluetooth on your computer you can send a jar.file to your phone to install games & apps

Hey guys, thanks for replying.

That's a fair question, but yeah, I have the java app loader enabled. I run it on my phone, it says to insert the cable, and I do. Then it tells me the JAL link is active, so I run Midway. It only connects through port 3. It won't let me do any other port. It says "Cannot open serial port! Would you like to change MIDway sttings?" if I try any port that isn't 3. I also tried changing the baud rate, but it didn't work either. Here are the results of everything I try:

Opening JAD file.............[OK]
Connecting the phone.........[FAILED]

Downloading canceled.

Is my computer blocking certain COM ports or something? I'm not sure what to do about this.

Unfortunately I don't think I have bluetooth on my computer, but that's also a good idea.

Forgive me Danation, but Im starting simple first then working up. And for rjl114's question Ive tried with no success with my bluetooth usb dongle to send games to phone. Yes that is a possibilty. I had com port issues at one time, but first did you try with rsdlite running? (Also mine connects also on com3 and looks like its good to go, but get same mess when try to download to phone.)

rjl114 Have you been able to download games to phone thru bluetooth? If so, how?

Danation
11-16-2008, 01:15 PM
No worries, simple is a good place to start. I actually hadn't tried that yet. I just did, though, with no effect. Same errors. I think it's the port I'm trying to use.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that I'm running Vista as my OS.

I run xp, so that as well is a possibility. Ive never worked with vista so I dont know where to go in vista to help you. Is it like windows?
right click my computer/mnger/device mnger/com ports(with phone linked), change com port? Danation do you like the new sigy?

modnmotos yes, you have to open up bluetooth and add device the wizard will install your phone, set bluetooth on phone to find me

Windows Vista doesn't do COM ports the same way as XP, unfortunately. It has virtual COM ports or something like that. I'd have to reconfigure MIDway, and there's no config.ini file.

So... I downloaded MOTODEV Suite or something like that. It still gave me some grief, but in the end, after a lot of tweaking, I was finally able to install the java app. Sigh, so much trouble for something so simple.

That's a cool sig. What's the inspiration behind it?

Maybe a post for vista os is needed for java installation with the "tweeks" explained. Just a thought. Sorry couldnt help more, have you always used vista os?

Like sci fi and the arm on my sig and avatar remind me of the Borg on Star Trek. Ive had the alien ball on fire in my sig for a while and didnt realize you had to click the "add pic to sig" to get it to show up. Thanks to sebgonz and SuperJoker for the help!

rjl114 How do you transfer the java app once the blutooth link is established? The program that came with my dongle doesnt have that option. Is there another program I can use? I think this would be an easier route for some.

does it have option to send file ?

Well, I thought about putting in detailed notes, but I'm not completely sure what ended up making it work. But I suppose I ought to write what I did for other's benefit.

I downloaded the MOTODEV Studio for Java ME. It has a utility (called Mway, I think) in it for loading java (it could come in the form of a standalone, but i'm not sure.) I tried to connect and it asked for a port, so I was worried it wouldn't work. I tried ports 1-20 and none of them worked. I clicked Config Tool and ran a configuration. It said "Device not connected." So I clicked refresh and it saw my phone.

Then when I tried to load the app with ports 1-20 some of them (meaning the ports) would start working, but fail (I think 3-5.) I was about to give up, but I tried COM port 4 one more time.... and it worked. So I think the configuration made it possible, and I just needed to try a few times.

Hopefully that will at least provide a starting point for other Vista users. Just as a note, I've only added one app, so I'm not sure if it's reliable yet.

Gotta love Star Trek TNG :) Yeah, I had that sig issue as well. I had to look through all sorts of posts to figure it out, lol.

Danation- so it eventually ended up working on com 4 like mine, just out of curiosity try midway again to see if it downloads now. If I were a betn man Ide bet it would. Dont know how many of my old posts youve read, but if your looking for games and apps http://www.mobiles24.com/ is free you just have to register and you get 30 downloads a day.

rjl114 To answer your question- yes only problem is when it attemps to send it says connection failed.(it will connect for add book entries and shows ftp service as ready) I believe it fails because it does not know were to put jad/jar files. You can not specify in the program where to put the file on the phone. The program tells you to access the folder on the computer through the device(phone), which in the v3re there is no way of browsing files on computer.(that I know of) So program isnt compatable with phone and vise versa. Thats why I asked, didnt know if maybe a diff program or one that you might of used would work better?(with my bluetooth usb dongle)

connection fails if bluetooth is off on phone or your sending the jad file, can you send wallpaper ? the phone knows were the file goes it works like downloading from internet

Modnmotos: Yup, Midway now works. I guess running the configuration utility in MOTODEV Suite for Jave ME solved the problem. Go figure. :)

Thanks for the link, I'll give it a try. I'd link in the site I'm using, but I think somebody previously had it removed from their post due to warez. Lol.

Update: After about three game uploads I went away and came back to my computer. Now I can't load anymore games. It's saying it can't connect to the COM port again. I've tried everything I tried previously. It still won't work.

Incredibly annoying.

Danation thats a bummer thought this issue was history. Its got to be something with vista(go figure microsoft with their new os's/just when they got all the kinks worked out with xp). Did you shutdown? Did vista go into screensaver mode?(Ive had issues with screen savers in xp disrupting other processes, dont think this is the issue here though) Did you leave link active?(maybe vista shutdown that port for security reasons) Did you reactivate link? Sorry I know these are elementary questions but just thinkn simple again. Throwing out thoughts for ya. Need to find out why com port is not accessable anymore. Can you uninstall MOTODEV Suite for Jave ME and try starting over again? I did have the same problems long time ago when I first started, and can't remember exactly what I did to solve it. Out of the blue try again. Also if it worked on com4 I would continue working with that com port. In my experience that will not change.(IN XP THOUGH)
S.T. tng lets not forget Star Wars either.:xwing:

rjl114 Link with phone is established and active. Bluetooth on phone is on. File transfer service is ready when I "push"(as its called bluetooth object push service) box pops up in lower righthand corner and says "failed to send objects".(on computer) In the window on the program at bottom it says "bluetooth object push service disconnected". This happens with jad,jar and wallpapers. Thanks with the help, I dont really need to transfer files this way ,but always wondered why I couldnt. And thought if we could figure it out it might help others! No problems transfering files phone to phone, just computer to phone. So again thanks:thumbsup:.

Yeah, it's definitely a Vista problem. I didn't do anything except close MOTODEV Suite and MIDway. I also disconnected my phone.

But here's the weird thing: I did that (meaning disconnecting and shutting down the software) earlier and it was fine.

Occasionally I get this to happen:

MWAY> Opening port COM4... Done.
MWAY> Transmitting JAD...
AMS: Serial: port[1] Data ready 6 byte(s).
SJAL : sjal_DataRdyHandler : got 15 bytes, expecting 84
SJAL : Timer expired.
MWAY> Unable to connect to the phone! Quitting...
MWAY> Closing port COM4... Done.
MWAY> Transmission failed!

I'm about ready to give up and use my girlfriend's XP machine for game loading. All other programs that are compatible with the v3re work on Vista.

In vista can you disable/erase that com port, and let vista recognize and enable again? Im thinkn in "xp" again. Was phone ok, sometimes my phone will "freeze" and it causes things like that timer expiring or mexplorer to freeze or close automatically... Then I take out batt and replace in phone and reboot everythings ok then. I tried more items for the webkey, I posted in the sticky.

As far as I know, you can't deal directly with COM ports in Vista (it's irritating, that's for sure.) I've been able to load an application again, but it's pretty unreliable. I've had the problem with the phone freezing when using M-explorer or RSD Lite, but not with any of the midlet managing programs. Thanks for trying to troubleshoot this with me. Vista certainly can be a pain sometimes.

I think I'm going to start a new thread about this specific topic to either help other Vista users.... or get help from them, lol.

Oh yes, Star Wars is classic (I must say, though, that I very much prefer the original trilogy over the new trilogy.)

Hey, thanks for the post in the remapping thread. It's good to see that there are more things that work.

Your welcome, thats what we're here for, to help each other with all our mods. Or at least try, dont know how much I actually helped other than throwing a few ideas at ya. Sounds like maybe a good idea with the vista thread. I wonder how many other people have had these problems? Ill keep working on the webkey subs too.
Well...
