Hey guys, I'm fairly new to modding, (first phone I've started on, and only had limited success so far with due to learning software before work every morning has been the v3re...)
But...I'm trying to figure out if there is ANY way to change the txting on this phone. It's driving me batty, 'cause I send 3000+ a month, and it's just not smooth, the response time sucks, and the symbol entering is lousy. I, unfortunately, got spoiled, I had a v3xx before this that, uh...is a little the worse for wear, (I can't use the 8 key. ever tried dialing without the 8? it's just about like trying to play the piano without the home key...) But the thing is, the symbol entry on the v3xx stock is freaking lovely, with the little popup menu for the symbols, and I've noticed that all of the mps out there seem to change a lot of appearances, add a little speed and a little space..but they don't really do much for the actual usability of the phone, which kinda makes me wonder what IS possible on it...
So what do you guys think?

The only mods that I know that have anything to do with texting is like you said: save texts to phone not sim which will give 2-5X amount of saved texts and motospeed which will reduce the 'lag' when pressing the #'s. I however havent had much success in this area, but others have I believe. Im by no means an expert though and maybe someone else out there has some sugestions. Why cant you use 8 is the phone broken? Its new or used?

There are iTap editors that I'm aware of that may help you (check the downloads section), but I haven't gotten around to using them yet. You ought to try them out and let us know what you can find.
I'm also in search for mods that are more practical than aesthetic, which is why I switched text message storage to the phone and remapped some keys. But it's tough to change major things on any phone. Modding is often more tweaking than overhaulling. I'm going to look into the possibility of writing corelets to add features and such, but that's just an idea. I'm not an expert yet, but I'm looking into things like that (with the little time I have to mod these days.)
btw, have you popped open your v3xx to see what's happening at the 8 key on the keypad? Maybe gunk blocking it or something?

hehe...popped open..define "popped open"...:: whistles ::
but yeah, there's a couple of other things that are going on with the v3xx other than the eight key, which I /did/ get working. sorta. I'm gonna try flashing it to see if it's a software/firmware issue, but a lot of times when I open it, I get digital tiling in a horizontal stripe pattern, and/or the screen will go dead on me, so I think it might just be time for a retirement party...
I'll take a look at the itap mods, (I'm trying to get that editor working for it anyway, 'cause it's rather annoying for the phone not to get some "choice" words and some simple extended vocabulary words.. we basically have phones with the vocabulary of a five grader, which /sux/.) :: grins ::
And then my major project for the day is going to be figuring out why the mp I chose to start with is blocking my caller id and fixing that.
Why is it that there's always so much to do, and never enough time?

I know this does not help with your original goal, but if you cannot find a solution, I *have* been able to get both f*ck and antidisestablishmentarianism with the i-tap predictive typing. The key is simply choosing "select" every so often to lock in the previous letters so the choices only branch from that point.
It's far from a comprehensive test, but between those two words I'm fairly confident that most words that would be relevant to an sms message are attainable through the i-tap.

By "popping open", I meant "carefully disassembling" lol.
pwyll is right about entering anything you need. I believe, though, that you can also add those words into iTap so that it will be able to predict them, rather than having to hit select so often.
As for the caller id blocking, this is how to enable it:

So obviously, uncheck that bit to disable it.

I would assume that that's what an "itap dictionary editor" would be for, though I haven't checked any out. I *am* curious about them, but the itap functionality on the V3re is so far ahead of the T-9 predictive text that I'm used to that it is still idle curiosity.
I was just offering a possible work-around while he looked for his solution, not trying to discourage the search. After all, if he finds the solution he's looking for I'd probably be interested in it myself--and he's likely to find out any number of *other* interesting things on the way ;-)

pwyll Is that a pic of you? just wondering. Is i-tap really that much faster? I dont text alot, but my thought is by the time you do this:
The key is simply choosing "select" every so often to lock in the previous letters so the choices only branch from that point.
Wouldnt it of been easier to just press the number 2x or 3x to get the letter you were looking for to spell the word? I guess I havent given it a chance. Everytime I used it it just frustrated the heck out of me and I couldnt spell the word i wanted.

itap is much much faster for regular words, but for unusual words, tap works better.

Yes, that is a picture of me trying to turn the camera off on my previous phone. Extremely poor ergonomic design meant the (unchangeable) camera button was constantly being triggered by the case *and* that it was very difficult to remove it from the case without taking a picture if the camera was on. It turned out to be one of the best pictures of me I'd seen, so I kept it for avatars and such :>

It is for me. For at least 90% of the words *I* use in sms, I only have to make the number of keypresses as there are letters in the word using predictive text rather than 2 to 5 times per letter using normal phone typing. And I have twitchy fingers, so if I have to hit a key four times to get a letter I'm likely to overshoot it on the first try...

I hear you about the the phone buttons being pressed by case that was the prob with the last samsung phone i had the case would turn the ringer off all the time and I would miss so many calls very frustrating!! I guess i could try diff entry modes with texting one more time I hear so many people use it.
