Not really just keep tring different things, make sure its the right size(height,width)/ make sure its named cl/ delete the other cl then load new cl in the correct folder. Pretty simple mod so dont get discouraged just keep playing around with it. Did you keep copy of old cl maybe try to load it into paint(or program of choice) and put new pic in on top of it resave. Use mexplorer and put your new cl.gif in the system folder.

If you're concerned that your cl.gif is in the wrong format, try downloading some other people's cl.gif's. Here's the one I use:

57841

Right click on the pic, and select "Save Picture As..." I have it called c8.gif right now, but you'll need to save it as cl.gif. It should work fine on your phone.

Did you turn the phone off and back on again? It's simple, but worth a try after you upload the new image.

ReAX222 thankyou thats one of those little things thats done so much its become second nature and not even a thought anymore. But someone new to modding wouldnt know about power cycling the phone after modding. Excelent point!

So when you disconnect phone then connect phone back to pkcomm can you see the cl.gif in the system folder? Have you tried using mexplorer for this it connects alot easier and is very user friendly.

Its kinda like windows it shows /a/ folder, When you open it it shows a list of folders like when you open my computer in windows. You just drag and drop things. Only use pkcomm for skin installs.

Are you positive it's in .gif format? Plus, there's more than one .gif format. I can't remember for certain but I think there's an 87 and a 89A or something like that. If you're using the wrong program, it may be doing the wrong format.

Try MS Paint or GIMP (or Photoshop if you have access.)

Also, is the size correct for absolute sure?

Older photoshops you kinda have to know how to do it its just not as easy as 'save' then select from drop menu '.gif' format. You have to 'export' and set pallet......

Irfanview is what I use--the GIF format it saves to works, or at least has on the 30 or 40 cl.gifs I've made/modified.

On the other hand, Irfanview defaults to saving in JPG or BMP format (depending on the source file) so I suggest double-checking the extension it's using in the "save as" dialog.

im positive im using the correct size and format, but maybe im using the other type of .gif format like Danation said. if so, how could i save it as the correct version?

I would be absolutely shocked if it was the wrong gif format, but I threw the idea out there just in case. What I would try is using MS Paint and save it as a .gif to see if that works. If not, then it's not a .gif format problem. And if you've verified the height and width, I wouldn't know.

Actually do this: post your image here, and I'll look at it.

Danation he said he tried your cl and it didnt work so i dont think format of gif is the problem i think goofy pkcomm isnt writing it there.

mobster do you have p2kphone, in the drop list, selected on the righthand side of pkcomm? Did you try mexplorer like i suggested? Just wondering

Yeah, I'm guessing somewhere along the line, the .gif conversion didn't work out correctly. I can't speak for all programs, but I know GIMP and MS Paint work.

When trying this, i took a photo that was about 300X300 and put it in .gif format using Paint.NET, MSPaint, and GIMP. MSPaint was the final program i used before it worked.

but.

To get it to work, the .gif has to be in the range of 100x80 (Abruptly) My picture is slightly hanging off the screen but overall it works now.

i was also using mexplore to transfer files. Hope that helps

I really doubt the version of GIF is the issue. The only format that should cause compatibility problems would be GIF2000, which I don't believe ever caught on (it's not even mentioned in the Wikipedia article). So the two "viable" options are 87a and 89a released in 1987 and 1989. It's nearly impossible for it to be a problem with the version of GIF since your phone would have to have code 20 years older than any other phones.

However, GIF offers a *lot* of options, and these are usually what causes compatibility issues. So, open up your image in Irfanview, then--

1) Go to the Image>Information menu and

make sure that the extention is all lower case
make sure that the DPI is either blank or 100x100 or less (probably not necessary, but it's a low resolution screen)
double check that Current size is 96 x 80 Pixels (80x96 will not work)

2) Go to the File>Save as... menu and

make sure the "Save interlaced" and "Save transparent color" are both NOT checked
double-check that the "Save as type" option says "GIF - Compuserve GIF" and that your File name is simply "cl" (without quotes or extension

3) Save

Copy that image to your phone. If it still doesn't work, open up the image in Irfanview, Save as "BMP - Windows Bitmap" Irfanview will automatically be using the bitmap now, so simply go back and Save as "GIF - Compuserve GIF" making sure to go through the above checklist again.

If *that* doesn't work, I can almost guarantee that it's not a GIF problem, though it still wouldn't hurt to go ahead and post the image so some of us can look at it just to make sure...

***Edit--

Well, there you go. Must be having internet problems--I could have sworn the post to which I replied was second to last. Sorry to come in with a long, useless post for a problem that's already been fixed. Have to go reload all my other open tabs to make sure they're up to date before replying...

Scott very informational and helpful post. Thanks and I sized mine exactly the same as the stock, didnt realize the phone would resize as long as its close.

I didn't think the version would matter. Just tossing an idea in there.

And when I said it must be a format problem, I meant size, resolution, transparency, etc.

Thanks for the info, Scott. As usual, you've added some good in depth information.
