what is the cg8.smg file on my v3re and where can i find it to change it?

When you backup your phone with Flash& backup 3, you can back it up into different formats. One is a singal file and its called a .shx format. This would be like what a monster pack comes in. The other is a binary format called (smg) and be 8 individual files and looks like this:
CG1 (Firmware)
CG2 (Flex)
CG3 (DSP Firmware)
CG4 (Languagepack)
CG7 (Digital sign)
CG8 [This is what you need to modify the boot screen with a program called bootscreen replacer]
CG15 (DRM Graphics)
CG18 (Digital sign)

So without fb3, which I believe you said it expired, you cant modify/change the boot screen, or access these files.

*side question- did you make your avatar? If you did good job, smooth transitions, what program did you use?

You will have to add an entry to the F&B3 profile to change CG8. Here's a link to jklong03's excellent guide:

Unfortunately, if you don't have F&B3, you're still stuck.

THANKYOU Danation yes I left out that important piece of information about modifing fb3 to show the cg8. Otherwise you would see whats in the list above except the cg8. Thanks again Danation. :rockon:
