I want to add a skin to my V3, but I'm not sure how.
Moto4Lin looks like it will let me upload the skin files, but I can't seem to create a directory to put them in. I tried using the Upload Path by typing in /a/mobile/skins/NameOfDirectory/, but it gives me a red error message saying it can't create the directory. I've tried uploading the whole folder that the files are in, but the "Open" button is grayed out for folders.
How exactly do I add the files?

You have to create the directory before you upload the files. If you keep getting that error, disconnect from Moto4lin, and close it down. Try re-opening it and reconnecting.
I found with my V3i that if I typed in the directory path ie. /a/mobile/skins/MacOSx (just an example) and then hit upload of the files I wanted together in there Moto4Lin uploaded and created the directory during upload.
If I tried to create a directory first I got the error every time. "Unable to create directory.

Yep Edo & Fluid are on the right track! :) Moto4lin has it's quirks, and it's best if you know them! As another general rule, when using Moto4lin, be patient...don't be click happy...let moto4lin finish its tasks before you click around and ask it to do other things. Sometimes when you mess it up, you need to quit and re-launch, sometimes even restart your phone. -Digitol-

When you create the directory, it needs to read like this:
/a/mobile/skins/MacOSX/ <----don't forget that last slash. That might be why it is unable to create the directory. Moto4lin is a cool program, but you need to have some patience with this thing. I know that I had a bunch of trial and errors when I first started messing with it.
New add to V3 + Moto4lin when connected. Make sure that your flip is closed on your phone. This prevents lags and hangups when you reboot the phone after loading/unloading skins. Also, if you are deleting more than 1 skin, do them 1 at a time. Delete the skin, reboot the phone. It is time consuming, but you will run into less errors and lock ups by doing it this way.

You won't be able to see the directory once you create it. In the dialog box, it should say directory created. If it says that, you created it. As long as it still says /a/mobile/skins/whateverdirectoryyoujustcreated/ in the text box after you create the directory, when you upload your skin, it will be there.
It's a little confusing at first, but once you see what I am talking about, you will understand.

G'day Parsa! Just to add a tiny clarification: Heavy's right "You won't be able to see the directory once you create it" ... M4L doesn't see empty directories/folders - but, if you know they're there, you can still upload to 'em.
Proof: Download the Java app 'File Manager v1.0.3.6' from jenfa.dev.juga.ru. You'll see directories like 'mixedmedia', 'partial' and 'ringtone' there that don't show up in M4L because (at least on my V3), they're empty.
Hope this helps!
Woops almost double posted. sorry !
I have the same problem. I read this whole thread and it sill gives me the:
[error] Unable to create directory

Hi Heavy- still looking for a way around deleting skins AND their directories. I can pull up a directory and delete the files, but the name of the directory still shows up in my phone when I go to Skins. Have you found any way (except w/PC apps) to delete the directory off of the phone menu? I try out skins, decide which to keep and which to toss, and then end up with the empty folders in my phone menu. God forbid I check one by accident and choose it, baaaaddd things happen. I managed my way out once, don't wanna do THAT again.
Thanks.

The one way that I found to delete the skin, was to connect to M4L, open the /a/media/skins and select the skin so that it shows in the upload path box. Once it shows, you simply hit Remove. I tried deleting them the way you mentioned, and it always left the directory, with nothing in it. Give this a shot and let me know how you fair.
BTW - I might have sold my RAZR. Oops. I have been messing with this Sony Ericsson W810i for a while now, and it is a pretty cool phone. I can create my own themes for the phone how I like them, but you cannot change the icons. Eh, that is OK for me for now.
I do like to stop in here once in a while and see how things are going. I still have my wife's V3 so I can get my fix if I want.

Tried that the first time, and it left the directory. I highlighted the directory and hit remove. I'll try again and see.
Sony, ehh? I wondered where you had got to. Well, thanks for the help. I'll post back.

Got it. The first one I had already removed the files from, I just re-added the directory (it said it failed to create) first, then hit remove, rebooted and it was gone. The full one, I hit remove, it told me it couldn't do it, I highlighted all the files and hit delete and it told me it failed to delete, and then I rebooted and the whole thing was gone. Moto4Lin is one hinkey app. It was easily connecting before I began to try doing this a few weeks ago- I would plug in and it would connect before I even did anything!- but it has been giving me the "can't find file directory" message in
addition to the standard "phone is busy' message. But if I keep at it, it will eventually connect. I read the posts on the pc forum with absolute envy (except I don't want to use my wife's pc) when they just do things with all of those cool apps that are fine-tuned to just do what they are supposed to do  !

I would run into that error also. You have to delete the directory, then reboot the phone. You should only do 1 skin at a time. I found that way to be the most error free way to do it. It is a pain, but if you do it each time, it will work properly.

I didn't mind doing the one at a time thing- I had already read the post about doing that. What got me was the fact that the app kept saying that the attempt to delete failed, and yet when I rebooted it had clearly worked.

Yep. M4L is a whacky program. Even though it says you aren't connected, you are. It says unable to create directory, it does it. Just takes some getting used to.
