CAUTIONS:
Use Motorola Phone Tools to backup the CG48
This program takes a corrupted backup of CG37
Getting started:
Power off the phone and wait about 5 seconds. Enter your phone into flash mode by holding the * (star) and # (pound) keys and pressing the red power-on button.
Open MotoMagxBackup0.01
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6168/33417110.png
Plug the phone into the computer and allow MM Backup to recognize the phone
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8453/97939476.png
Select the RAMldr file you downloaded earlier
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/9817/11302729.png
Check the boxes next to the code groups you wish to backup
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/7486/95320377.png
Click the "read" button, then select the folder you wish to backup the specified code groups to. Click "Ok" when you are ready to backup
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2215/51473852.png
Your phone will restart, and you will get a notice from the program when the backing is finished.

Your phone is now backed up!

Good job. MotoMaxBackup M3 linked. Thread stuck.
btw. Why the R6637_G_81.11.17R_128 BOOTLOADER RAMDLD? We already have the stock flashfile.
navyfootball94
01-28-2009, 06:14 AM
That is the RAMldr so if someone wants to backup their bootloader, they can.

When i go to put it into flash mode (Hold * & #) then press red it just changes my settings from ring/vibrate/ring and vibrate cause when # is pressed, thats what the function does.
Probably something really simple i know but cant seem to suss it out :/:smoker:
Also, I have the R6637_G_81.03.05R version, which is best?
THanks

Haha sorry. Turn off the phone first, then wait like 5 seconds. Then you can enter flash mode. Once you have gotten into flash mode you will get something like this:
Boot loader
06.2A
Blah Blah
Connect to
USB
And for you firmware version, just click the link under RAMldr files for your firmware version. It will be the link with the same exact text as your firmware version.

THanks alot for that. Knew it was something silly :)
Just 1 other thing. Mine is R6637_G_81.03.05R on O2 network in the UK. Just wondering if theres any point in putting another version on? What advantages could i get from other firmwares and which ones are reccomended. Sorry for total noob questions, Very good with tech but new to this mobile firmware update thing and the advantages/disadvantages of different firmwares :)

No that is a good question that a lot of people ask. I am not completely sure. Advantages of having different firmware could be greater signal reception, faster menus, and I think that's about it. I would advise staying with your current firmware version until we get more information about ZN5 firmwares

By now if your FW is working fine then there's no reason to change of FW, unless it starts to lag or things like that as i haven't seen any modded FW you can stay with yours :D

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but when I try to back up my zn5 firmware, motomagx doesn't read/show my phone when connected in bootloader start-up. Any ideas?

Go to this guide to get the drivers installation software installed. Once it is installed, open it up and select the option at the bottom to: "Clean and reinstall." Once the drivers have been installed, try the guide above again.

Truly sorry guys. There was a violation in the service agreement between our website software provider (Zen Cart) and the hosting company. Zen Cart is one of the official softwares offered by GoDaddy.com, but yet Zen Cart is violating GoDaddy's service agreement so our website was closed due to this. So now we have to completely rebuild our site. It is taking some time. I will get these links updated once the site is ready.
UPDATE: All files have been restored and links updated successfully. Please report any problems with downloads by going to forphoneunlock.net and clicking 'Contact Us' at the top.
Thanks

How long does it usually take to make a full backup?
Skrilax_CZ
03-18-2009, 01:24 AM
Not much, several minutes. However don't back up CG48 (phone memory, for that, use MPT) and CG37 (takes corrupted backup).

I have done myself a backup but, without CG48 and CG37, my question is: Is gonna work when I flash it? even If it doesn't have both files inside? I didn't want to use stock CG37 and CG48, because It would flash data from stock flashfile, hope u can solve my doubt, thanks!
navyfootball94
03-18-2009, 01:41 PM
On all of the other Moto phones, you can flash a backup or an mp even if it is missing some of the CGs. I highly doubt it would be different on the ZN5, so its a safe bet that it will work. If it doesn't, you can always go to bootlaoder mode and flash another MP.
If it does work, you will still keep all the old data in the CGs that weren't overwritten.
saman0suke
03-18-2009, 02:43 PM
That's exactly what I want to do, I just hope it works, thanks :D
navyfootball94
03-19-2009, 01:08 AM
Ya. Just flash the backup without those CG's and it will be fine. If you do get a brick, just flash another mp or you can use a guide at MMUS to get CG48 and CG37 flashable so you can compile a full mp and flash it to your phone.

I got weird issues after flashing back my backup (it was with "fixed" CG37). Phone saying full user memory, rebooting when calling / receiving a call (always). Fixed by stock reflash.
navyfootball94
03-19-2009, 07:25 AM
When you flashed your backup, did you fix the CG48, or did u use a stock one, or did u just not flash that CG?
Skrilax_CZ
03-19-2009, 07:44 AM
I never flashed back CG48. I flashed back "fixed" CG37.

05-19-2009, 04:12 PM
Sorry about that. I moved the server over to a different operating system and it must have changed the permissions. Let me just allow that directory to be accessed without a password. Links should be working in just a few minutes

Well I just had to switch my web server back onto linux after doing some projects on Windows. And doing so messed up some permissions that I never thought to check.

Funny, I've never been able to make a successful backup. I've tried with fixed CG37 and CG48. Even after fix when i flash it always gives weird errors. Worst one it hangs when accessing phone book and sms.
Just out of curiosity, What is the point of backing up with without those two CGs? I mean if it's missing the user settings and Apps installed then why backup? or are those things in any other CG?
navyfootball94
05-21-2009, 06:20 AM
I honestly do not know. I don't feel the need for backups yet because I store everything on my memory card. As long as I have stock reflashes then I will be fine if I flash anything dangerous

Yeah, good question :ok:
Why we backup, if the backup file is not complet and stable.
I miss the P2K backup method :p .
navyfootball94
06-12-2009, 11:10 AM
I dont see a point of backing up on any phone (well except the PDS and bootloader). I store all my files on the memory card. So, if I mess something up in the flash, a stock reflash won't erase any of my files.
If you want to back up your stuff, use Motorola Phone Tools.

06-13-2009, 07:58 AM
I store everything on my memory card.
As for the phonebook, I back it up regularly using BACKUP (http://www.motorolabackup.com/) via WiFi, and whenever I flash, I restore my data that way.

You say in the main thread we have to backup CG48 using Motorola Phone Tools...... how's that? I tried to create a CG48 backup with MMBackup, but the program always say "out of memory", so I've created a backup without CG37 and CG48, I guess it should work right? I know CG37 it's just personal settings, and CG48 is internal memory, so there aren't necessary, in theory ( I don't need personal settings, 'cause I can configure them again, and always save everything on the memory card).
navyfootball94
06-14-2009, 09:37 PM
I think there is just a "Backup" option in Motorola Phone Tools. It doesn't say anything about code groups or flashing because the program needs to be user friendly for people who don't know a thing about phones.

No Official Motorola User application (like MPT) backs up any Code Groups. They only back up the phonebook, calendar, tasks and notes. That's all.
User data has to be backed up manually.
Restoring that backup, will not repair firmware errors either.
saman0suke
06-15-2009, 10:21 AM
But what happen if I use a backup with no CG48 and CG37 ('cause I couldn't do it)? I've read there's no problem since CG37 it's just personal settings and CG48 internal memory (since I don't use it, there won't be problem).
navyfootball94
06-15-2009, 10:36 AM
In that case I wouldn't worry. As long as you have stock reflashed or MPs that are tested and work, you are fine.

Stupid question: how do I do a backup if im running linux on my laptop? MPT is only available for MS Windows (or mac if you buy that version). How stupid is that?? A linux phone that needs a windows PC?? duh.
And please dont mention WINE!

You can't. At least you can't easily.
You need to set up USBLAN on your Linux PC, and have your phone running FTP/Telnet.
Still you can't flash using Linux lol.
I know, Motorola sometimes just don't make sense haha.

Well there's a method, but i don't know if it can be applied on ZN5, some Z6 users supposedly applied it a while ago, but i didn't play much attention to that, as i was using Win7 at that point :p
