Hey everyone
I was just wondering, I hear people talking about unlocking codes to unlock GSM phones all the time. Is that code the same as your MSL? Or are they different?

Pardon if I'm being a n00b, but what's the MSL number?
Seeing as I haven't heard of it, though, I'm pretty sure the answer is no. The unlock code, also called the subsidy code, is a code assigned to all GSM phones (at least... the ones that can be unlocked.) It's not found anywhere in the phones information. It's in, or near, the PDS.

MSL stands for Master Subsidy Lock. I'm trying to figure out if they're the same thing, no luck yet, you can find your MSL in a seem.

Then no. You can't find the subsidy code in the seems.
But all the same, I'd like to look closer into it. What seem?

Hang on a sec, I made a post somewhere yesterday...
here it is, "seem 0055 record 1, your MSL should be there. Example, 31 32 33 34 35 36 would mean your MSL is 123456."

Simple answer, No.. The subsidy code is based in part off the IMEI number, and resides in an area of the phone that is not accessible (or not yet if you want to be optimistic)

MSL seems to be a Sprint-specific thing. @dan: don't think you're gonna find that in a SEEM unless you flashed your V3m to Sprint.

is it used for anything? i've never seen a Bell phone. i ran a Bell V3c reflash on my V3m and it worked, but it was was stock moto still, no menu i'd need an MSL for.

Yeah, to enter the v9m programming menu you hit #073887* then it asks for the security code 236197, that code is common to all v9m's at the least, dunno about other phones, then I'm actually in the programming menu, but if I attempt to change something it asks for the MSL or SPC. To my understanding they're essentially the same thing.

ah, i see. i'd never tried to change anything in the programming menu except on sprint, which has a whole different menu. if you reflash sprint it resets your msl to 000000

aah, gotcha. I've been looking around in the programming menu a bit just to get a feel for it, no doubt I'll brick it soon and do my first flash lol
