View Full Version : [Guide] How to enable Quadband (850 Mhz)

This guide is made by me using information originally posted by vestigo.

This guide will make your L6 Quadband (enabling the 850MHZ)

I assume that your phone is connected allready or else check out the Getting Connected guide in the motoguide right here on MMM.

Programs you need:
P2KManager --> Download here (http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=792)!
XVI32 --> Download here (http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=314)!

Now that you have the software you need to do this, we just have to pull the seems from the phone, edit them, and upload them back to the phone.
It’s very quick and easy. It took me about 10 minutes total to do this.

Steps to download the seems:

1.Open the P2K Manager software.
2.After about 5 seconds, the bottom status bar will say ‘Connected’.
3.In the bottom of this window, there’s a ‘Seem’ box. This is where
we download and upload the seems. Next to where it says ‘From’, type 0025, and next to the ‘To’ box, type 0025.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/3117/guide13smallls7.png (http://imageshack.us)

4.Press the ‘Download Seem’ button right below it. It will ask where you want to save this seem. You MUST leave the filename xxxx_yyyy.seem. Once you hit ‘Save’, it will save it with the name of 0025_0001.seem onto your computer.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2565/guide14xo2.png (http://imageshack.us)

5.Do the same steps as step 4, but enter the seem 0032 in the From and To box.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4774/guide15smallwp0.png (http://imageshack.us)

6.Press ‘Download Seem’ and then leave the name xxxx_yyyy.seem. It will save this seem as 0032_0001.seem onto your computer.
http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/9373/guide16su2.png (http://imageshack.us)

Make a copy of these 2 seem files into another folder, incase you need to upload them again.

Now, it’s time to edit the seems:

1.Open the XVI32 software. This is a standard hex editing software package.
2.Click on the ‘File’ menu and choose ‘Open’.
3.Browse to the folder where you saved the Seem files.
4.Click on the 0025_0001.seem and click ‘Open’.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2994/guide24jx4.png (http://imageshack.us)

5.There will only be one piece of information in this file. Click once on the grid where you see the numbers showing up. I believe mine said 09 in the box before I edited it, and in the bottom left status bar, it says ‘Adr. Hex: 00’.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1184/guide25smalloi2.png (http://imageshack.us)

6.Click on the ‘Tools’ menu and choose ‘Bit manipulation’.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7881/guide26so9.png (http://imageshack.us)

7.Bit 0 and Bit 3 will have a check in them when you open this window. This sets the phone to 900/1800/1900 band. Leave these checked and put a check in the box for Bit 1. This will change the phone to 850/900/1800/1900.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1310/guide27pk3.png (http://imageshack.us)

8.Press the ‘Set’ button.
9.Now, click on the ‘File’ menu and click on ‘Save’.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4885/guide29smalllh6.png (http://imageshack.us)

The first file is done. It’s time to edit the second file.

1.Stay in the XVI32 software. Click on ‘File’ and ‘Open’.
2.Browse to the folder you saved the seems and open the 0032_0001.seem.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/5332/guide32tn1.png (http://imageshack.us)
3.There will be a lot more information in this file.
4.Click on the boxes until you see ‘Adr. Hex: 50’ in the status bar at the bottom.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2947/guide34smalltn8.png (http://imageshack.us)

5.Once you find it, click on ‘Tools’ menu and ‘Bit Manipulation.
6.Put a check in the box for Bit 0. This enables 850 MHz.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1307/guide36xr5.png (http://imageshack.us)

7.Press ‘Set’.
8.Click on the ‘File’ menu and click ‘Save’.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3172/guide38smallrf4.png (http://imageshack.us)

9.You can close the XVI32 software now.

Now, the seems are edited and ready to be sent back to the phone.

1.Open the P2K Manager software.
2.In the ‘Seem’ box, next to where it says the word ‘Seem’, enter 0025 and in the ‘Rec’ box to the right of that, enter 0001.
3.Press the ‘Upload Seem’ button and choose the file 0025_0001.seem.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/8885/guide43smallgp9.png (http://imageshack.us)

4.In the box at the bottom, it should say ‘File Upload… <more information> ok.’ If it says ‘ok’ at the end, it means the seem uploaded properly.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/1664/guide44smalldu7.png (http://imageshack.us)

5.Now, it’s time to upload the next seem. In the ‘Seem’ box, enter 0032 and in the ‘Rec’ box, enter 0001.
6.Press the ‘Upload Seem’ button and choose the file 0032_0001.seem.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4715/guide46smallwm1.png (http://imageshack.us)

7.It should say OK at the bottom again.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/6896/guide47smallaj8.png (http://imageshack.us)

Now that the seems are uploaded, click on the ‘Restart Phone’ button on the P2K Manager software. The phone will restart, and possibly lock up for a minute. You can power off the phone and back on again and you will then have a quad band phone.

Hello All,
So when you are done with the edit, on your phone you would select Automatic in the band section right ?

SuperJoker
12-07-2006, 03:37 PM
It depends. If you are sure that your network uses the 850 band, you could select 850/1900. If you're not sure, you could select the automatic and it would automatticly select the best one.

joe_crack
12-08-2006, 11:12 PM
Generally, the best thing is to set it to automatic as that way your phone will pick whatever bend is better.
I have done this with my L6 and so far, I cannot complain. I have five bars almost all the time.
Only thing is that I cannot set my phone to ‘vibrate’ since that function got lost after I uploaded edited seems back to my phone. Any help in regards to this would be helpful.

Replace the modded seem with a original stock seem. We have some original stock seem in our L6 downloads section. ;)

Do you know if the changes in this guide will apply to the V365?

The way I understand it, this is a quad band capable phone, but Moto (or Cingular) enbles only the three bands that are appropriate for the part of the world where its sold (850, 1800, 1900 for North America, 900, 1800, 1900 for Europe and Asia). So I assume the 4th band is in there somewhere, but it is not choosable in the Network Set Up. I'm only offered 850, 1800, 1900, and Automatic.

If Moto uses the same software in the V365, your guide should work with the exception that I'll be enableing the 900 band bit instead of the 850.

Any experince with this phone yet? Except for the PTT feature, it's pretty much the same as the V360.

Hope this is useful but I've modified seems 0025 and 0032 and enabled quadband support for my L6 - it worked without a hitch and my phone rebooted normally - thank god lol.

It now shows 850/1900 and 1800/900 as well as automatic mode.

I'll upload the modified seems to my website for anyone to download them (to enable quadband) if thats useful.

The files are now uploaded to my site, you can download the modified seems which enable 850MHz in addition to 900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz from:

Modified Seem - 0025 Record one (0025_0001.seem): -
http://www.xgsystems.net/software/hellomoto/SLVR-L6/seems/quadband/0025_0001.seem

Modified Seem - 0032 Record one (0032_0001.seem):
http://www.xgsystems.net/software/hellomoto/SLVR-L6/seems/quadband/0032_0001.seem

Should you need them, the original seem's downloaded direct from the phone, no hacking:

Original Seem - 0025 Record One (0025_0001.seem)
http://www.xgsystems.net/software/hellomoto/SLVR-L6/seems/original_seems/0025_0001.seem

Original Seem - 0032 Record One (0032_0001.seem)
http://www.xgsystems.net/software/hellomoto/SLVR-L6/seems/original_seems/0032_0001.seem

Hopefully this will be useful. Sorry can't work out uploading to the forum yet lol...

I successfully got my phone to be quadband. I still get the same signal as triband though. What is the problem?

SuperJoker
01-11-2007, 05:34 PM
It depends on your carrier buddy. Cingular usually uses the 850 Mhz. it's not 100% that you will get a better reception. ;)

Hello.

I successfully got my phone to be quadband.
But, in my phone in net band menu I have these positions:
1. Automatic
2. 850/1900
3. Europe/Asia

Why I haven't 900/1800 position? (I know that Europe/Asia means the same)
My soft is R3517_G_0A.61.0CR with 090E langpack.

It's probably because of your langpack I think. Each langpack shows things differently.

yup, exactly the same for l2

Whenever I pull up the seem that needs to be changed like the example instead of showing a "09" in the box like the example mine shows a "00" and in the example it shows that 3 and 0 are checked in the manipulation and on mine nothing is checked. So do I need to make it exactly like what is in the example?

SuperJoker

Just do the ones that are mentioned. It is the same for the L2.

If it doesn't work for you, there is an easier way.
You can flash the quadbandactivater file to your phone using RSD Lite and you're done. The file can be found in the L6 other files download section. Google for RSD Lite. ;)

That is just cosmetic.

Try this, pull out your 0032_0001 seem.

Open it with XVI32 and do a search for "GSM 900/1800-1900". When you found this, change it to what you want. e.g. add 850 to it.

I have a V3x and a V6 Maxx... both tri-band phones. I have 2 v3's... and they worked very good, even in my universities lecture hall...

this new v6 maxx doesnt work at all inside the lecture hall, neither does the v3x.

Does your seem moding method work with my v6 maxx and v3x? Or do I have to do it differently? Please help me out, I love this v6 maxx, just I love being able to txt message ppl while in class (emergency purposes, example my mom fainted at home and i didnt even get a call because I had no reception) and thats a true story. Please help.

Hmm, I don't think that it will work on the maxx, since it's a P2K05 phone. It's totally different. This guide was designed for the L7, L6, V3. It might work on the V3x tough...

so there is no way to do it on this phone? I found something on this forum that has to do with maxx software upgrading.. here it is... I dont know what to do though, if you can make a step by step thing using this link... that would be awsome.

Hey man, I'd love to help you out. If I had a maxx in my hands, I would have done that. I have zero experience about modding the Maxx, it's a totally different phone. But, I'm VERY sure tha if you post your question in the maxx forum, they will help you out. Just start a new thread on asking how to enable quadband. ;)

Best of luck dude. :shots:

Nice thread...
I've just bought L6 and was really pissed off 'cause it didn't have 850 band, as they promised... (and I'm really gonna need this band)
I was about to go and make a scene at the shop (you saved me from making a complete idiot out of myself) :)

btw
The whole seem editing stuff is a lot more simple in the moto4lin program...
(and, like 1000th times before to all kinds of people, I will recommend everybody to use Linux, cause it's lot cooler then other OS-es :)
Anyway, the moto4lin makes the whole P2Ktools + hex editor a lot easier... The whole thing is like 2 clicks away...

SuperJoker
05-31-2007, 04:58 PM
Nice, yeah. As I have mentioned in the above post. I was using XVI32, because back then, it was one of the old ways of doing it. Everything is allot easier now as more tools are developed.

I finally tried this but I think it didn't go as it should.
I can't edit the 0025.0001 seem address 0. It always remains to 30h (thats how I found it). Is it because its a locked phone?
My 0032.0001 seem address 50h doesn't show the same bits as in the example. Continued to check bit 0 though.
Now, my network selection just shows automatic and whenever my signal drops, the phone restarts.
What now?

SuperJoker
07-01-2007, 10:56 PM
You may have damaged the seems. Upload the stock ones of those that you have edited back to your phone. You can find them here, http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=86.

An easier way to enable the quadband feature is by flashing this file using RSD Lite. You may need to google for RSD Lite, since it's warez. http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1810

I have great signal in every place now, even in the subway and downstairs in my home, where I usually had bad signal or even not at all. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! =)

SuperJoker
07-02-2007, 04:50 PM
Awesome.

Well, moto didn't add it. Just like many other things, such as funlights. I think the reason herefore is, to let you buy another phone with this feature, which also more expensive (the L7).

Hello there, this is my first post here, but I'd already mod my L6i thanks to you guys! (funlights, clublights, eventlights, homekeys, reprogram left and right key to change volume, etc)

My phone works on:
Automatic
850/1900
1800

But the 900 band is missing, is there a way to active the 900 band? If I do this mod using this guide, will I get the 900 to work?

I'm from Venezuela, my phone is from movistar, wich just enabled the gsm fuction to new phones, last year they used cdma phones, so the signal isn't strong enough everywhere, maybe I will get better signal by activating the 900 band. Am I right?

Thanks!!

Edit:

What about this?:
SEEM 0032_0001
offset 0E - bit 0: Retrieve IMEI by pressing *#06# (1 on, 0 off)
bit 1 - Subsidy Lock Available (1 on, 0 off)
bit 4 - GSM 900MHz Capable (1 on, 0 off)
bit 5 - GSM 1800MHz Capable (1 on, 0 off)
bit 6 - GSM 1900MHz Capable (1 on, 0 off)

This was found at http://xlr8.us/hofo/map.txt so two questions:
1. Activating bit 4 will activate the 900 band in my phone and will it improve my signal? and...
2. Deactivating bit 1 will turn off the subsidy lock of my L6i unlocking my phone to other SIMS? (I've read a lot about test point, unlocking, codes, programs but I don't know, will it work?

Thanks!!

hepek
07-11-2007, 11:32 AM
I don't think you'll get any improvements regarding your signal quality by adding the 900MHz band to your phone 'cause GSM networks in Venezuela (as far as I know) don't use this band.

900/1800MHz is used mostly in Europe, Asia, Africa, and some countries of Americas.
850/1900MHz are used in US and most other American countries, since the original GSM band (900) was already allocated for other purposes.

You can try it. Looks like bit 4 enables the 900 Mhz. Or else you can just flash a stock MP which holds the normal tri-bands.

Nope, that will not unlock your phone.

Hello,
I have an L2 on the Cingular network, and I followed the directions above to enable 850 mhz. But there was no apparent change besides the text on the main screen changing from "Cingular" to "AT&T". I looked under Settings > Phone Status > Other Information > Technology and it still says "GSM 900/1800-1900". I followed the instructions exactly as they were written.

I restored the original seems to the L2 and it still says "AT&T." I shut the phone off and turned it back on each time, but I'm thinking that my phone might not be able to get 850 this way. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Yup, it's there in Settings > Network > Network Setup. Instead of the options
- Automatic
- 1900
- 900/1800
It now reads:
- Automatic
- 850/1900
- 900/1800
I'm hoping I'll start getting better reception, less dropped calls, etc etc.
Sorry for not looking further before posting. Thanks SuperJoker! Now that I have done that I put the funlights in as a treat.

Now i just need to figure out how to modify it.

Followed steps for first seem file, enabled 900Mhz all OK ; but when trying to edit second file, bit manipulation window is what I have; what hex adress to search for and what bits check an uncheck to enable 900 Mhz ??
Thanks in advance
:)
