View Full Version : Screen dead - Tried replacement, still no luck

My wife's RAZR V3 screen died but phone is still working. Ordered a replacement screen and "very carefully" replaced it and still no luck. Ribbons looked ok. Interesting experience doing this kind of micro work.

Nothing happened to the phone to cause the failure. She was dialing a number and the screen flashed the carrier logo then the screen went out.

Looking at further replacement parts I could try are the ribbon cables (keypad and screen) and maybe the cable memory battery (what does this battery do?). It is part of the screen ribbon cable so I thought that with the strange behavior of the phone when it failed that that might be it. I hate to order all three when this failure had been found to be one of the three on most occasions (although that is the reason why I ordered the screen first - probably backlight out).

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you,
Autoeng

Have you tried a master reset and a reflash yet?

i know that the keymat flex ribbon is very sensitive and the slightest nick can cause such an effect.

This is a unmodded phone. Do you think a master reset would accomplish anything? How can I do one without being able to see the screen? Can it be done with software?

Yes you can do it in motokit.

Both ribbons are only like $20 total so I guess that is my next step. Hate throwing away the $30 for the screen though. And I'd still like to know what the battery does.

the battery supplies the power :wow:

but you'd save alot of money by getting a tech who knows what they're doing. My next tip is before you go off buying everying, get a digital multimeter that way you can check and find what is and isnt getting a signal.

A Digital MultiMeter?

Is this a piece of software or hardware?

I plan buying a new housing for my V3. And just incase I run into a similar problem, I could probably use this Digital MultiMeter.

I think you are referring to the main power battery. I'm referring to the one that is on the screen flex ribbon - about the size of a hearing aid battery.

ohhhh that battery just keeps the flash memory from deleting itself by losing power such as if you take the main battery out or the main battery dies. its sort of a backup.

and a digitial multimeter is a device that measures voltage. I use it to trace circuits to figure out on water damaged phones if i need to replace a transistor, resistor, capacitor and also to isolate a problem.

I've got a digi MM. How do you test the ribbon from the board to the screen? I've never tested a ribbon cable or anything with an end like what plugs into the screen.

just get the v3 official dissasembly guide and it includes all of the mapped circuits, than just check opposing pins.

Ive had customers come in with V3s that said "bluetooth module not present". Regular custies, not modders. Master reset = BT works. It sure cant hurt.

Phlame, PM me. I got a V330 board with a bad radio, if you do the work that small, LMK.

No i doubt that will solve your problems. I am saying flex cable.

Thanks much.

Replaced the flex cable last night and all is good now, just hoping it stays that way. The cause was a partially broken hinge pin (the longer one) cut the cable. Filed the broken edges as smooth as I could and will hope that it doesn't cut the new one.

Thanks guys,
