Trying to change cl.gif on the go, can I enlarge seem?

I saw the instructions for changing cl.gif on the go and thought it'd be neat iof I could do this for us V3c users. The problem is this: The directory where you store pictures on the V3c is at /a/motorola/shared/picture the seem that directs the phone to the location of cl.gif is only 4 rows long (0030 bytes) and won't fit that long directory name. So does anyone know if I can just safely add rows of bytes to the seem to accomadate the long file location? Please note that I'm using seem 2771 and 2772 which is the correct seem for the V3c. I made backups this time too!

Ok, so I used XVI32 to enlarge the seem so the entire address fits. I m afraid to put it on my phone though, because I don't know if having a larger than expected seem will hurt. does anyone know?

Just try it. I did it on a v3c!

I don't know what you mean you tried. I've had the external LCD pic changed for a while now, but I wanted to be able to change it on the fly. The thing is that on the V3c, there's no way to rename the file on the phone :(

I would still like to relocate my cl.gif to my pictures folder, that way I can change them by sending different cl.gifs from my PalmOS computer and reboot the phone to change it. I had to make the seem bigger than it was to start with and now my phone won't take it. I've never had a problem uploading seems in p2kseem, but now it says it uploads it, then when I reboot, the seems are unchanged....Is the phone not accepting it because it's bigger than it's supposed to be?

Actually, you dont make it larger... just do this:

/_a_/_m_o_b_i_l_e_/_p_i_c_t_u_r_e_/_c_._g_i_f

The _ are the little boxes, BTW.

Works perfectly. I've done in, say, 30 phones or so.

You know, I was wondering the same thing. Actually, I was looking to see if there were a seem to specify where the folders that are in the shared folder could be changed. Then you could just duplicate those directories in /a/mobile/ and just change seem 2771 & 2772 to reflect that. Though, I have yet to see any seem or edit to reflect this possibility. :confused:

I have not heard of a way to change that. If there was a way to do it, we could share the skins folder too and just bluetooth skins over, that would be cool!

Anyway I have just tried everything under the sun I can think of. If you try to upload a 2771 seem that is one byte over what is supposed to be there, the phone simply won't accept it. It doesn't give an error message, but the one that was in there before just stays there. I have tested this repeatedly. I also tried leaving the seem the same size and I type "/ a / m o t o r o l a / s h a r e d / p i c t " then it runs out of room so I pick it right up in seem 2772 "r e / c l . g i f" doesn't work that way either.

I also tried seeing if there were more records in seem 2771, no rec 2, 3, 4, or 5..I gave up after that

I have also heard that some seems (on the e815 anyway and the software is nearly identical to the V3c) you have to remove the battery before you turn it off, because if you power cycle, it'll change the seem back to what it's supposed to be. Never experienced this, and it didn't make a difference in regards to this either, but that's what I heard. They must've fixed that between the e815 and V3c.. *sigh* so disappointing. Anyone else have any ideas?

There has got to be a way. If one has the VZW v3c and flashes to Alltel, the skins folder. So there is something in a seem or other file that dictates what goes where. Maybe if there were just someway to add an entry to "Personalize" menu that would be strictly for the outer lcd. I'm going to d/l the Alltel filesystem tree and see what I can find when the files are opened in a hex editor.

That would be great. It may require a firmware change. Have you tried adding anything to the menu? I have and still haven't been able to successfully change them (except by loading the verizon menu system, which sucks, no video camera!) Let us know what you find though!
