How to Change a 2.5mm mic jack to a 3.5mm

by hellogoodbye2

This tutorial is to modify the small piece that comes standard in every RAZR V3M box.It is intentionally used right out of the box to be hooked up in the USB slot on the RAZR and used so a 2.5mm headset plug can be plugged in. This modified motorola piece has been tested on the Motorola V3m RAZR phone. This mod is very easy to do if you have any soldering skills what so ever. This same tutorial can be used on any other, even if not motorola device, as long as it has the 2.5mm jack on the motherboard.

Anything that you do before, during, or after this modification that could cause harm to you, your phone, ect. I take no responsibility for. Proceed at your own risk.

TOOLS NEEDED:
~Soldering iron (I used 25watt)-

~Solder (I used silver bearing solder)-

~Hot glue gun and hot glue

~Skinny razor (no not the phone)

~Skinny RAZR (yes the phone) or some other phone that has the usb hookup to test out your device when you are done modifying it.

~Headphones to use after you have the hookup done.

1.) Take your brand new hookup that would get no use before this mod and pry it open really carefully.

2.) Now take your 3.5mm headphone jack and cut it off leaving room to strip the casing and wires inside. It will look like this.

3.) Pop your motherboard piece out of the plastic casing it is in very carefully. Now heres the hard part. If you want a nice stylin' look to your adapter you need to unsolder your old jack, or just plain grind it off with something lol. I'm one for fun so I took my dremel to it and just plain sanded the whole darn jack right off. You will notice the small black box off of the motherboard now.

4.) Now you need to solder your headphone 3.5mm jack to the solder pads on the motherboard. This is the small layout I made of what it should look like. (note that there are 3 pads, 3 on top 3 on the bottom, you can chose from either set, top or bottom, you don't need to bridge them together or anything just pick one and solder like the diagram says to.

5.) When you have it soldered on it will look like this in real life.

6.) Put the motherboard back in the bottom side of the plastic casing.

7.) Add some hot glue over your connections to make sure that nothing can move or be ripped out in any way.

8.) Snap your lid on before the glue drys so your top will stay on nice and snug. AND WAHLAH! YOUR FINISHED!
