Seem Editing Your Motorola Phone in OS X.

by poetic_folly

Seem editing is a feature specific way of modding your phone. Say, for instance, you want to change one thing, like have your speaker phone call stay connected when you close the flip, or change the display timeout options from a max of 20 seconds to a max of 60. With both those options, there is a simple seem edit which you can do to change the option in your phone. Many small tweaks can be done with seem editing--a complete map of currently known seem edits (compiled by Xlr8) can be found here. Not all seem edits work on all phones, but you can also look at your specific phones guide section here on ModMyMoto to see which edits do and don't apply, or try it out for yourself. If you see anything on there that your phone currently doesn't do, but you'd like it to, then you need to seem edit.

But what is a seem? Here's a great definition by Manalive over on MotoModders: "Seem (NVSEEM): SEEMS are storage containers for Phone Settings information...Each setting is stored as a single bit, which can have a value of 1 or 0. Often, the value of a bit is represented by a check box, Checked = 1, Unchecked = 0." This is what we will be editing--those individual settings.

Lets get started.

I'm assuming you've already followed the Get Connected guide and have got Moto4Lin recognizing your phone.

Open Moto4Lin.

All right, now hit "Connect/disconnect" to get us going...

You should see the "[info] Phone connected as P2K" info displayed in the bottom portion of Moto4Lin.

Hit the "Seem Editor" button.

You should see something like this:

Good. Now, for this tutorial we are going to use the following edit for my Slvr, from the Slvr Seem Map page:

If you have a Razr, you can read the documented Seem Edits here for the Razr. Now, since we can tell from the seem edit that we are looking at editing seem 0032 record 0001. Lets plug that into Moto4Lin, and hit "Read seem".

You will see the following message in the Moto4Lin Info box.

Good, now lets go ahead and make the edit. The grid with all the numbers in Moto4Lin is the seem, and you can see on the grid how it lines up. According to the seem map we looked at earlier, we are looking for offset 007c. So, on the left, go to the 007_ row, and find where it intersects with the _c column. This is offset 007c. Click it.

Check out the "Bit editor" section of the seem editor now, you will see a few "bits" checked, and a few unchecked. Don't worry if yours doesn't look the same as mine, we may have different edits and thats fine.

Again, according to the seem map and the edit we are making in this tutorial, we now need to edit bit 2. Notice bit 2 is currently UNchecked. Go ahead and check the box under bit 2. This not only changes its value to "checked", it changes it from 0 to 1.

Good. Now thats done, lets go ahead and put the edited seem back on the phone by clicking "Write seem".

You will now see the following message displayed in your info box:

Great! That means you have successfully edited the seem an uploaded it to your phone. Easy, huh? Now, to see the results of your edit, simply restart the phone by clickking the "Restart" button in Moto4Lin, and you're all set!

You will see this message in your info box, which means the whole thing is done, and we have finished!

Congratulations! You have just made your first seem edit on your Motorola phone using Mac OS X!
